The homeowners for this project first reached out to us in 2013 about a different project in a different house, but finally, the timing worked out in 2019 when they circled back about a project planned for 2020. Our clients for this project are an active couple whose family has grown in the last few years. They enjoy being outside, but when inside they like to cook, play, and relax. The first floor of their home needed a facelift while at the same time they felt they needed more space for their larger family. In order to make the project work with their life and budget, however, we separated it into two Phases.
Phase 1 involved taking the existing garage space (red doors on the exterior picture) and turning it into a living room, bathroom, and laundry room. The new living room space now overlooks the nearby brook with light pouring into the previously dank garage through five new windows. Phase 2, the following year, was a complete kitchen remodel that created a new space for a mud room and opened up the floor plan to include the dining room. This busy, active family utilizes their mudroom as a landing place after a long day. The removal of the wall between the kitchen and dining room transformed the space into an inviting, airy space to enjoy hosting friends or a quick breakfast at the bar.
This project highlighted the old floors with a fresh sanding as well as incorporated several salvaged pieces of wood for the gorgeous shelving and paneling in the kitchen. It also brought the outside in with a new, gorgeous view of the brook for this outdoorsy family. We know this home will be well-loved for years to come as their family comes home to rest after big adventures.
